A large wholesaler has used WhatsApp to survey its customers—and the speed of engagement shows why the channel deserves serious attention beyond transactional messaging.

Business customers completing a mobile survey in a wholesale environment

WhatsApp is already well established as a channel for timely, transactional customer communication. Order updates, delivery notifications and service messages are a natural fit for a platform people check throughout the day.

But could it also work for something that asks more of the recipient?

One of our large customers has just put that question to the test by using WhatsApp to distribute a B2B customer survey. It is the first time we have seen the channel used in this way—and the early results are striking.

More than half of messages read within a day

The survey was not connected to an order, delivery or other immediate transaction. Customers were being asked to give up some of their time to share feedback, with entry into a prize draw for account credit offered as an incentive.

Even so, engagement was fast:

  • 30% of survey messages were read within the first hour
  • 53% were read within one day
  • 59% had been read after seven days

That first hour is particularly interesting. More than half of all the messages read during the seven-day period were opened in just 60 minutes.

Responses arrived just as quickly

The survey converted 5.3% of readers into completed responses during its first week.

But the headline is not simply the completion rate. It is how quickly people acted. Once the first response arrived, more than half of all completed responses came in within an hour. Almost four in five were received within six hours, and nearly nine in ten arrived on the first day.

Traditional B2B research can take days or weeks to gather momentum. Here, the customer had a substantial body of feedback within hours.

WhatsApp can do more than deliver updates

This early result points to a broader role for WhatsApp in B2B customer engagement. It combines immediacy with very little friction: the message appears in a channel customers already use, the request is clear, and the survey is only a tap away.

That does not mean every survey will produce the same result. The relevance of the message, the strength of the customer relationship, the survey experience and the incentive will all affect participation. But it does show that customers are willing to engage with non-transactional B2B communication through WhatsApp—and to do so quickly.

The campaign is not finished. A follow-up message to customers who have not yet responded is planned, giving the wholesaler another opportunity to increase participation without repeatedly contacting those who have already completed the survey.

For businesses that need useful customer feedback while it is still timely, WhatsApp may offer something genuinely valuable: not just reach, but speed.
